What does it take to become a pilot?
- You must be at least 17 years old to take the private pilot practical and
written test with a FAA designated examiner. To prepare for this practical
test, you must first pass a 60-question knowledge exam where you demonstrate
your knowledge of aerodynamics, medical, weather, navigation and rules and
regulations.
- You can also prepare for the knowledge exam by self-study, formal ground
school privately with your instructor or with a group. Your preparation can
be done prior to or concurrently with flight instruction. Flight instruction
can begin at any time and will prepare you to meet the flight proficiency
requirements.
- Generally, you will need at least 60 hours of flight training to become a
pilot. If you fly twice a week, you can complete the training in four to six
months. The national average is 65 flight hours for applicants taking the
test.
How much will it cost?
- Instruction for Private, Instrument, Commercial, Instructor or ATP
certificates is $42 an hour. The price for
aircraft rental is based on type and year of the aircraft. All
prices are "wet" (including fuel). Computer Based Instruction (CBI) kits include texts, and all navigation
and computational materials, $299.
